The Hampton Roads Partnership Strategic Goals

In its long-term vision for the future, the Hampton Roads Partnership has identified three areas -- education, transportation, and the economy -- as being critical to real progress in the region. The Partnership has set goals for each area:

The Partnership also tracks performance in these areas via the customized measures and indicators on this website. The results are intended to serve as a catalyst for new regional initiatives and activities to help the Hampton Roads region attain its goals.

Quality Workforce through Education

The Partnership seeks to unite the region's stakeholders behind efforts to ensure that all citizens gain the knowledge and life skills necessary to succeed in our global economy and society.

A highly qualified workforce is a key element in a region's competitiveness. Recent research also shows that such "knowledge stock," which includes technology patents and educational attainment, is the primary driver of an area's per capita income.

Clearly, education and workforce quality are closely related, because education equips individuals for many tasks required on the job and enhances their ability to adapt to new working environments.

Competitive Economy

The Hampton Roads Partnership is an economic development organization whose mission is to "provide leadership to focus on those strategic issues that will enhance Hampton Roads' competitiveness in the global economy, with resulting income and job growth for our citizens." The current Partnership strategic plan supports efforts to improve the competitiveness of the region's economy, with a particular emphasis on port development and modeling and simulation.

Modern Transportation Infrastructure

The Partnership supports a regional transportation system that:

  • enables easy movement of people and goods;
  • efficiently uses land resources;
  • enhances the economy; and
  • improves the overall quality of life.

Hampton Roads is a beautiful region with a thriving port and many rivers and harbors. These waterways contribute greatly to commerce and quality of life, but also create fairly unique transportation challenges.

Traffic congestion presents more than a headache for commuters; it has a negative impact on the delivery of goods and services and on the general well-being of citizens. Congestion also increases levels of noise and air pollution.

A modern transportation infrastructure keeps congestion and environmental effects to a minimum, while still allowing goods and people to move about freely.

For highlights on how Hampton Roads is doing in transportation, see the Transportation Summary.
