Education Summary
Elevating the levels of educational attainment and preparedness ensures that citizens gain the knowledge and life skills required by the global economy. Highlights of the region's progress include:
- Over 91 percent of children entering kindergarten in the Hampton Roads region are prepared in literacy fundamentals, a higher percentage than any other region of Virginia.
- During the 2010-11 school year, 81.6 percent of students tested in the Hampton Roads region passed the Third Grade Reading Standards of Learning assessment.
- Nearly 89 percent of adults in the Hampton Roads region have at least a high school diploma (or equivalent), but the on-time high school graduation rate remains the second lowest in Virginia.
- In 2010, nearly 75 percent of high school seniors in the Hampton Roads region planned to attend a two-year or four-year college.
